Why Coach Wallets Is Popular Authentic Buyer Tips

Coach Explained: Your Complete Guide to the Label in 2026

Few American fashion names are more familiar than Coach, and in 2026 its business is growing sharply. These days the label sells clothing, footwear and accessories in stores worldwide, although it developed from a small leather workshop and later grew into a handbag specialist. The guiding formula at the heart of the label has stayed consistent for decades: leather goods of good quality, priced below the traditional European luxury houses. That niche has been defined by a federal court as accessible luxury, set apart from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.

Where Coach came from, its ownership and leadership, how big the business has become and its product range are all explained in this guide. Since the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet often causes confusion, it clarifies that too. Each number is dated to its source, while the prices given are observed market prices rather than an official price list.

From a Manhattan Leather Workshop to an American Fashion Name

Coach’s history begins in 1941, when a tiny family-run leather workshop was founded in Manhattan. Six craftspeople working in a loft on 34th Street made men’s wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods, according to Coach’s own account. Both handbags and the Coach name arrived later, with the name dating to about 1960 or 1961. It was not Miles and Lillian Cahn who were the first owners of the workshop, though the couple is sometimes incorrectly presented as such.

The Cahns became part of the business in coach store 1946, and by around 1950 Miles was managing the factory. In 1961 the couple bought out the original owners and took control. The suggestion of adding women’s handbags is reported to have come from Lillian Cahn, and that move reshaped the company. Miles Cahn is credited with developing glovetanned leather, a finish modeled on the way a worn baseball glove grows softer with use.

The Bonnie Cashin Era

No other designer is more closely tied to early Coach than Bonnie Cashin, the first to serve as its lead designer. She was not a co-founder of Coach, and she is said to have worked under contract rather than as an employee. Coach’s own pages list her first year as both 1961 and 1962, so her start remains uncertain. There is little question, however, that she continued designing for Coach until 1974.

In 1964 Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure, which Coach says was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. Side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors are also credited to her, and these touches loosened up the brand’s look. The turnlock is even now one of the most recognizable Coach details, and it appears on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

Owners, Listings and the Birth of Tapestry

Coach was bought by Sara Lee Corporation in July 1985. The company listed its shares in October 2000, and Sara Lee is said to have sold out entirely the following year. In 2001 Coach debuted its Signature collection with the “C” monogram, so the pattern is a modern addition, not a mid-century heritage motif. On 31 October 2017, Coach, Inc. became Tapestry, Inc., and its stock ticker moved from COH to TPR.

Only the parent company took on a new name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products were not renamed. Coach, Inc. had purchased Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry sold that shoe brand to Caleres in a deal that was finalized on 4 August 2025. By 2026, Tapestry’s stable includes only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, with Coach by far the bigger of the two.

The Capri Deal That Never Closed

Tapestry announced on 10 August 2023 that it had struck a deal to buy Capri Holdings, the group behind Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission contested the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to stop it with a preliminary injunction. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York handed down the preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it prevented the companies from closing while the challenge continued.

In its decision, the court agreed that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, distinct from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024, saying the legal process was unlikely to conclude before their February 2025 deadline. The acquisition was never completed, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.

Who Is in Charge at Coach Today

Joanne Crevoiserat is chief executive of Tapestry, the parent company. The brand itself is led by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, having taken the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and become permanent in April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was revealed in June 2013.

Vevers continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026, having reportedly presented his first Coach collection in February 2014. Before Coach, he is reported to have been creative director at Loewe after a spell at Mulberry. Older designs have been reissued and vintage shapes reworked into new bags such as the Tabby, with Coach leaning on its archive under his direction. On 11 February 2026, Vevers showed his Fall 2026 collection at the Cunard Building in New York.

Coach at a Glance

To gauge Coach’s scale, the best source is Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026. Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million, of which Coach’s net sales accounted for $6,914.7 million, a 24% increase on the prior year. Coach, in other words, was responsible for about 86% of group sales.

Coach’s count of directly operated stores came to 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. A figure of about 1,299 stores also appears in some sources, but it counts every Tapestry store rather than Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags increased at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has linked that rise partly to reduced promotional activity.

Handbags, Apparel and Footwear: What Coach Offers

Structured icons are paired with soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, and handbags remain the heart of the business. Built on a 1970s archive shape, the Tabby arrived in 2019; the Rogue first appeared in 2016 and returned in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, followed in August 2024. The Empire Carryall was shown on the Fall 2024 runway and made available in February 2025. The Kisslock Frame Bag, said to be the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, while a Rogue 25 in alligator was recorded at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. Items in the Coach Originals line are not vintage: the line offers newly made reissues of archive designs.

Varsity jackets made in leather and in leather with wool, the label’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats all featured in coach clothing for Fall 2026, a sign that ready-to-wear is now a significant part of the offer. The same show added blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. Footwear includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, and fashion press noted loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. On top of this, Coach oversees Coach (Re)Loved, a 2021 launch reported to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, along with Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand that debuted on 20 April 2023.

Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online

The current collections are sold in a full-price coach store, and the largest flagships use the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as planned for 2027. Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis sell the brand in the UK, and London’s Coach House on Regent Street likewise opened in 2016. Anyone hunting for a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket from the latest season should look in the full-price range.

Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official sales channel, comprising outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. A quote attributed to Coach’s head of investor relations in 2014 put the share of outlet merchandise made for the outlet channel at around 85%, but that figure is dated, and Tapestry has since talked about bringing some full-price product into outlets. The public evidence does not support the claim that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet all have UK outlet stores. When searching online for the brand, shoppers can end up typing “couch” or “cosch”, so it is worth checking that any site offering big discounts is truly Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
